Successful, yes. Incredibly rich, yes. Modest? Not so much.
Sir Richard Branson treated his Twitter followers to a sublime example of the art of name-dropping yesterday, detailing the ‘fascinating, eclectic group who have dropped by on Necker’.
Necker, of course, is his private island resort in the middle of the Caribbean – not exactly a quick drive from anywhere.
Me and my celebrity friends: Sir Richard Branson (1) poses on the beach at Necker Island with guests including Rolling Stones Ronnie Wood (2), nephew Ned Rocknroll (3), actor David Hasselhoff (4), model Rachel Hunter (5), singer Natalie Imbruglia (6), Wood's wife Sally Humphreys (7), actress Kate Winslet (8) and Hasselhoff's girlfriend Hayley Roberts (9)
They included Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood and his new bride Sally Humphreys, supermodel Rachel Hunter, singer Natalie Imbruglia and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff.
They were joined, naturally, by Sir Richard’s nephew, Ned Rocknroll, and his new wife, Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet.
Sir Richard wrote: ‘Incredibly fortunate living on an island just because of the sheer number of fascinating people who go out of their way to drop by.
‘This picture shows the fascinating eclecticism of people lucky enough to meet on Necker.
‘Sir Cameron Mackintosh came by for lunch this week, floating on a cloud after the enormous success of his film Les Miserables.’
He continued: ‘Ronnie Wood and his new bride Sally, Rachel Hunter, Natalie Imbruglia and Kate Winslet came by Necker as well.
‘Also a real pleasure to see Sara Blakely, who became a close friend when as a young entrepreneur she was one of the contestants on my TV show The Rebel Billionaire.
Branson bought Necker Island in the Caribbean in 1978 and guests can rent it exclusively all year round - if they can afford to pay thousands of pounds a night
Earlier this month Branson was also pictured in a hot tub on the island with One Direction star Harry Styles
Sir Richard, 62, bought the 74-acre resort in the British Virgin Islands in 1978. Guests can rent the island exclusively all year round – if they can afford to pay thousands of pounds a night.
Accommodation includes Sir Richard’s eight-bedroom private home, Temple House, which is available for hire ‘for a limited time’.
There are also six smaller Bali Houses, each of which has one bedroom, as well as another separate private house called the Love Temple.
Miss Winslet met her husband-to-be, Mr Rocknroll, during a stay on the island in July 2011. He changed his name from the rather more prosaic Abel Smith.
The following month the main house went up in flames after it was hit by lightning during a tropical storm.
Around 20 people, including Miss Winslet and her family, fled as a fire took hold, burning the palm-roofed house almost to the ground.
Sir Richard later praised the actress for helping to carry his 90-year-old mother, Eve, to safety.
