The phrase 'mom jeans' conjures an image that could not be further removed from the designs we seen on the catwalk.
But now they appear to have become the last word in fashion as Topshop has launched a new cut that pays tribute to the much-derided style.
The $65 jeans, which have even been named 'Mom', were spotted by reporter Dhani Mau at Fashionista.com who had been browsing the British fashion giant's Manhattan flagship.
Making a comeback: Topshop has launched a denim style called the 'mom jean' - and the fashion set love it
Nineties revival: The $65 jeans have a high waist and loose fit, in tribute to the typically middle-aged look
She was not put off by the name as others might be, admitting that she 'loved everything about them' and is 'having a hard time not wearing them every single day.'
And she is not alone. Fashion writer Siam Goorwich is an equal fan. She told MailOnline: 'I like to think I'm channeling Nineties Janet Jackson in mine . . . I love the fact you can dress them down with a pair of slipper shoes or brogues or up with a pair of pointed stilettos.'
Blast from the past: The Topshop jeans come in a range of washes such as acid and bleach
She added that she hopes the mom jean will succeed the skinny jean as the most ubiquitous denim cut.
'We've all been waiting for something to come along and topple the skinny from the top of the jean pile for years now,' she said. 'I think we all assumed the bootcut would come and reclaim it's place as the jean de jour, but thankfully the mom has come and pipped it to the post.'
But while the mom jean is a hit with the girls, it seems men are not so convinced. Bullett Media's Fiona Duncan admits that the only man she knows who loves mom jeans is her father.
'My decade-long personal survey has evidenced that he is the only one,' she writes. 'Every long-term lover, boyfriend, or brofriend I’ve had has confessed to me . . . "I'm sorry, please don’t take this the wrong way, I just, I just don’t like it when you wear those high-waisted jeans."'

That's not to say she isn't a fan - in fact, the only thing she hates is the term.
'"Mom jeans" means a mom body, it’s designed as an insult,' she explained.
Love them or loathe them, mom jeans are at the centre of fashion's love affair with the Nineties.
The Topshop version comes in washes such as bleach and acid wash that would look at home on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
And with influential celebrity fans including stylemaker Elle Fanning, it looks like they won't be in store for very long.
